MANILA -- The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) introduced to the public on Friday its latest batch of information materials, which aim to further promote competitiveness in the country's rice industry.

The freshly-launched materials consist of briefers, magazines, and a book titled, "Comparative Efficiency of Rice Farming in Asia and the Philippines".

The reading materials provide information that are useful in developing science-based policies for helping improve the rice industry's performance.
Irrigation and mechanization are among the issues covered in the materials.

Meanwhile, the book shows that the country's farming sector lags behind those of neighboring countries in terms of rice yield.

It also discusses factors that can help the country achieve higher yield, reduce production costs, and improve efficiency, the agency noted.

"That book also offers insights for the public to further understand issues besetting the industry," UP Los BaƱos Department of Economics
chairperson, Dr. Agham Cuevas, said at the launch.

The information materials launched on Friday are aligned with the agency's "Quality rice, quality life" slogan, which PhilRice also introduced in Metro Manila on the same day.

Established through Executive Order 1061 series of 1985, PhilRice is the government agency tasked with helping develop high-yielding and cost-reducing technologies so farmers can produce enough rice for people nationwide. (PNA)
